So a little back-story is in order...

The history of the New Omicron Republic and my history with Lego:

When I was a kid, I played with Lego a LOT.  My friends Rob and David each had their own little city and we'd create characters and back-stories for all the people in our little worlds.  I believe the names of their cities were called Evergreen City and Greenskies (although I could have that wrong).  My little world was called the Omicron Republic and I thought it kicked butt.  I had a series of cities built in my room connected by a homemade monorail (you can tell how badly I wanted the actual monorail!).  There was a capitol city complete with a tiny senate chambers (well, compared to the one I have now) and some federal buildings and a few outlying towns (Sea-harbor, industry-ville, and a spaceport area).  I had names for most of the characters, but the only one I remember now is the President; Marlene Shaft.  The civilization also supported a rather sizable space fleet and my friends and I would often stage huge battles and summits.  Lots of fun.  Sadly, I don't know of a single picture documenting any of this.

Sometime in my teens I stopped building with Lego and put it away.  Every now and then when I'd come back from college my Mom would hear me pull out the bin upstairs and then hear the familiar sound of fingers piling through Lego.  It really was the one toy I kept from my childhood (and how grateful I am!)

After Chris and I moved to Seattle in 2001 we met a good friend of mine now, named Daniel.  We were on a tour of his house when he showed me his Lego room.  I didn't get much time to poke around but I remember being blown away that such a thing existed!  Could adults really do this?  This thought stayed in my head for quite a while.

Coming out of my Dark Ages...

Around December of 2003, we had been living in our house for about a year and still had a room that was basically used for throwing dirty clothes in.  After having met up with Daniel a few times and talking to Chris, I finally decided I'd like to bring back my Lego collection from my parents' house and bring it home.  I figured it would at least be a fun thing to play with and keep in the un-used room.  Before Christmas Chris and I pulled out his collection of bricks and brought them over to our house.  That evening we stayed up way too late in the living room by the fire and built a whole bunch of dumb little stuff.  It was a blast and I knew I was hooked (little did I know that Chris was hooked too).  After seeing my family for Christmas that year, I managed to pack my entire Lego collection into suitcases and carry-ons and bring it back home.  I had purchased some lots of used Lego on E-bay in the meantime, so when I got home I quickly added my pile to the pile of bricks I had accumulated in the meantime and got to sorting.  It was something I had never gotten around to doing while I was a kid and after doing some research on other AFOL's (Adult Fan Of Lego) online I realized it was something I should do.  So a few weeks went by and I finally managed to sort the collection.  It made it a lot easier to find the huge volume of new brick I would accumulate from then until now as it all had a place.  And over time I've found storage solutions for the room that fit the growing collection.

While I was sorting (there was little time to build at this point), I decided that it would be helpful to have a theme to build around, much like I did as a kid.  So, I brought back the Omicron Republic with a twist.  The story is a bit of a rip off of Battlestar Galactica and maybe a little of Star Trek, but it works so I won't complain.

Here it goes...the founding of the New Omicron Republic...

After the original planet of Omicron and most of their colonies were destroyed by an unknown and alien force, the remaining population gathered in every possible space-faring vessel and grouped together in a fleet to find a new home.  Seeing the aliens had never been discovered in the past, the fleet decided it was prudent to go far beyond the space they had previously explored and try and re-establish themselves before being found.  The population was crammed on a variety of ships over a few decades.  Population density became part of their culture, and throughout the ordeal, President Marlene Shaft rallied the people and consequently continued to elect her as their President in round after round of election.  Ships were retro-fitted with stronger weapons and engines; cargo ships becoming battleships, transports serving as cruisers, and luxury liners finding new uses as cities in the space.  Along the way, numerous friendly aliens were encountered and an alliance was eventually formed between the Omicron people and numerous other races.  These people eventually settled into the general population and a greater Republic was formed.

After 20+ years, the people found a new planet suitable for colonization and settled down.  The NEW Omicron Republic was founded and the civilization quickly established roots on the planet.  Several of the spaceships were dismantled and used as building materials on the planet, while others were more permanently upgraded to defend the area.

Years later, the New Omicron Republic has become, once again, a strong force to be reckoned with.  The planet itself is now home to numerous cities, including the Capitol (with the Senate Chambers, one of the first buildings erected as a sign of faith for the people).  The space fleet has expanded and been upgraded and there are even several outlying colonies.

Of course, with success comes difficulty.  The government has been getting more paranoid than in the past and several underground government organizations have formed as a radical reaction to possible threats.  While still a peaceful democratic world, there is a growing fear that a militant and fearful faction will take greater control of the future and ruin the new paradise the people have found.

So, that's about it.  The space section of MOCs are obviously meant to be ships in the Fleet and stuff in the TOWN section are buildings in some of the cities on the planet.  Thanks for making it this far down the page!
